Apple unveiled the iPhone 11 in September 2019, and while Apple’s flagship lineup now consists of the iPhone 12, 12 Pro, 12 mini, and 12 Pro Max, the iPhone 11 is still sold as a cheaper option starting at $ 599.
The iPhone 11 replaces the iPhone XR and features a 6.1-inch LCD, which Apple calls “Retina HD LCD.” It has a resolution of 1792 x 828 at 326 ppi, a contrast ratio of 1400: 1, a maximum brightness of 625 nits, True Tone support for adjusting white balance to the ambient light, and wide color support for lifelike colors.
Like the iPhone XR, the iPhone 11 does not support 3D Touch, but uses Haptic Touch. Tactile touch is supported in iOS 13, but lacks the pressure sensitivity of 3D Touch. The iPhone 11 and 11 Pro also support Haptic Touch, and Apple has dropped 3D Touch from its entire iPhone lineup.
In terms of design, the iPhone 11 has a glass body in six different colors: white, black, yellow, (PRODUCT) RED, purple, and green. The last two colors are new for 2019.
The iPhone 11 isn’t much different from the iPhone XR, but Apple says it’s made from the toughest glass ever found in a smartphone and offers improved water resistance (IP68), increasing overall durability. Spatial audio offers more immersive audio, and Dolby Atmos is supported.
The camera system differentiates the iPhone 11 from the XR: Apple is introducing a new dual-lens camera that is an improvement over the previous single-lens camera. The camera setup includes a standard wide-angle camera and a new 120-degree ultra wide-angle camera. Unlike the iPhone 11 Pro and Pro Max, there is no telephoto lens.
Apple says the ultra-wide-angle camera captures four times as many scenes, making it ideal for landscape photography, architectural images, dense shots, and more. Both cameras work together to enable portrait mode for people, pets, objects, and more, which is an upgrade from the iPhone XR, which only supports portrait mode shots of people.
The camera interface on iPhone 11 has been redesigned to be more immersive, allowing you to see and capture out-of-frame areas with the ultra wide-angle camera if you want to. Supports 2x optical zoom as well as 5x digital zoom.
Apple has added a new Night Mode designed to take advantage of the iPhone’s processing capabilities and a new wide-angle camera sensor for crisp, clear, bright photos even in very low light conditions, similar to the Night Sight mode on Google Pixel devices.
Next-generation Smart HDR takes advantage of machine learning to produce more natural images with improved detail in highlights and shadows, and in iOS 13.2 Apple is introducing Deep Fusion, which uses advanced machine learning techniques for pixel-by-pixel image processing. photos optimized for texture, detail and noise. Overall, the iPhone 11 offers vastly improved photographic capabilities over the XR.
4K HDR video recording is available at 24, 30, or 60fps, and both cameras in the iPhone 11 can be used to record video with real-time switchable video with a simple tap.
QuickTake Movie mode lets you hold down the shutter button in the Camera app to automatically record video with subject tracking, while Audio Zoom matches the audio to the video frame for more dynamic audio.
The front-facing TrueDepth Camera system has been updated with a new 12MP camera that makes Face ID 30 percent faster and allows you to work from more angles. For the first time, it supports 120fps slow-motion video, allowing users to shoot slow-motion selfies, also known as “sloths”. The TrueDepth camera also supports next-generation intelligent HDR for more natural-looking photos and can record 4K video at 60fps.
Inside the iPhone 11, there is a 7nm A13 Bionic chip and a third-generation neural engine. Apple says the A13 Bionic is the fastest processor ever in a smartphone, with 20 percent faster processors and GPUs than the A12. New machine learning accelerators enable the CPU to perform more than 1 trillion operations per second, and the Neural Engine is faster than ever for real-time photo and video analysis.
In terms of battery life, the iPhone 11 lasts an hour longer than the iPhone XR. It supports up to 17 hours of video playback, up to 10 hours of video streaming, and 65 hours of audio playback, although that doesn’t match the battery life of the more expensive iPhone 11 Pro and Pro Max. Fast charging is available, but unlike the iPhone 11 Pro, the iPhone 11 comes with a standard 5W charger and fast charging requires additional hardware.
The iPhone 11 features an Intel modem chip with Gigabit LTE, 2×2 MIMO and LAA, Wi-Fi 6 (802.11ax) with 2×2 MIMO, Bluetooth 5.0, Dual-SIM with eSIM, and Apple-designed U1 U1 ultra-wideband. chip that improves spatial perception and allows better tracking of movements in the room. In iOS 13.1, the chip lets you direct AirDrop prompts so you can drag and drop files to the person you’re pointing at with your iPhone.

Some iPhone 11 and iPhone 12 models suffer from an issue that causes the color of the aluminum case to fade. Apparently, this primarily affects the PRODUCT (RED) versions of the device, but it can also affect other colors.
Like the iPhone XR, the iPhone 11 has a precision machined 7000-series aluminum frame that encloses an all-glass body. The size of the iPhone 11, with its 6.1-inch display, sits between the 5.8-inch iPhone 11 Pro and the 6.5-inch iPhone 11 Pro Max.
The iPhone 11 features an edge-to-edge display with thin bezels and no Home button, with a notch at the top for the TrueDepth camera system. Because it uses an LCD instead of an OLED display, the bezel on the iPhone 11 is slightly thicker than the iPhone 11 Pro models.
Apart from the notch at the top for the Face ID camera, speaker, and ambient light sensor, the iPhone 11 is the entire display.
The iPhone 11 measures 150.9mm high, 75.7mm wide, and 8.3mm thick, which is identical to the previous generation iPhone XR. It weighs in at 6.84 ounces, which is also identical to the XR. It is thicker than the iPhone 11 Pro and iPhone 11 Pro Max at 8.1mm thick.
The back of iPhone 11 features the most significant design change ever, thanks to a new dual-camera system. Apple uses a new square camera bump that flows into the rest of the device. The two camera lenses protrude slightly from the back of the iPhone because the camera elements are thicker than the iPhone’s body.
The Apple logo on the iPhone 11 has been relocated from previous iPhone models. It is now in the middle of the device rather than at the top, a change that may have been implemented for the planned two-way charging feature that was later canceled. A two-way wireless charging option would allow the iPhone 11 to be used to charge other iPhones, Apple Watch, AirPods, and other Qi-based devices.
According to Apple, the iPhone 11 is made from the toughest glass ever found in a smartphone, so in theory it should be better able to withstand accidental bumps and drops. It’s still glass, though, so it’s best to use a case or have AppleCare + in case of accidental damage.
Apple says it uses a “dual ion exchange process” to strengthen the front and rear glass on the iPhone 11.
The iPhone 11 is still available in six colors, but Apple introduced new colors this year. It comes in black, green, yellow, purple, (PRODUCT) RED, and white, with Apple eliminating the coral and blue hues that the iPhone XR was available in.
Water and dust resistant
The iPhone 11 has an IP68 water resistance rating, which is higher than the IP67 of the previous generation iPhone XR. It is designed to withstand depths of up to two meters (6.5 feet) for up to 30 minutes. Two meters is twice the depth of the iPhone XR, but half the depth of the iPhone 11 Pro.
The iPhone 11 Pro can withstand immersion in water up to four meters (13 feet) for up to 30 minutes.
With an IP68 waterproof rating, iPhone 11 can withstand splash, rain, and short-term accidental exposure to water, but deliberate exposure to water should be avoided. Apple warns that water and dust resistance is not permanent and degrades as a result of normal wear and tear.
Apple’s warranty does not cover liquid damage to iOS devices, so caution is advised when exposing iPhone 11 to liquids.
Spatial audio and Dolby Atmos
IPhone 11 includes a new Spatial Sound feature that simulates surround sound for a more immersive audio experience. It also supports Dolby Atmos audio.
Like the iPhone XR, the iPhone 11 uses an LCD that it calls the Liquid Retina HD display. It measures 6.1 inches and has a resolution of 1792 x 828 pixels and a density of 326 ppi.
Although the iPhone 11 has an LCD instead of an OLED display, Apple claims it is the most advanced LCD in a smartphone using new engineering technologies. It is identical to the display on the iPhone XR and is inferior to the displays on the iPhone 11 Pro and Pro Max.
The iPhone 11 display continues to support Apple’s latest technological advances, including Tap to Wake to activate the display with one touch, swipe-based gestures to replace the Home Touch ID button, True Tone to match the display’s white balance to its surroundings. lighting and a wide range of colors for vibrant, lifelike colors.
It has a contrast ratio of 1400: 1, which is one area where it lags far behind the iPhone 11 Pro models. The iPhone 11 Pro and Pro Max have a 2,000,000: 1 contrast ratio, which means richer colors, blacker blacks, and HDR support that isn’t available on the iPhone 11.
Apple has removed 3D Touch from the iPhone XR and replaced it with the new Haptic Touch option, which is now available for the entire 2019 iPhone line.
Haptic Touch is similar to 3D Touch and offers most of the same functionality, but it is not pressure sensitive, so there are not multiple functions for each press. The iPhone 11 features the A13 Bionic chip, which is faster and more efficient than the A12 Bionic chip in the iPhone XR. The two high-performance CPU cores in the A13 are 20 percent faster and consume 30 percent less power than the A12, while the four efficiency cores are up to 20 percent faster and use 40 percent less power.
iPhone 11 Pro games
The GPU in the A13 is 20 percent faster than the GPU in the A12 and uses 40 percent less power.
According to AnandTech testing, the A13 in the iPhone 11 and 11 Pro offers 50-60 percent more consistent graphics performance than the iPhone XS and 20 percent faster processor performance.
The A13 chip features a next-generation 8-core neural engine that Apple says is faster than ever for real-time photo and video analysis. A pair of machine learning accelerators enable the CPU to run up to six times faster, performing over 1 trillion operations per second.
The Neural Engine is 20 percent faster and uses 15 percent less power than the previous generation Neural Engine. Apple says its Neural Engine supports the camera system, Face ID, AR apps, and more.
Core ML 3 for Developers enables apps to leverage the A13 Bionic’s capabilities for apps and games.
RAM and storage space
The iPhone 11 comes with 4GB of RAM, up from 3GB in the iPhone XR. It is available in 64, 128 and 256 GB capacities.
TrueDepth camera and Face ID
Introduced in 2017, Face ID is a biometric authentication system used in the iPhone 11 that features a notch for the True Depth camera system that allows Face ID.
In iPhone 11, the TrueDepth camera system has been enhanced with new hardware. It’s faster and can handle a wider range of angles, so it’s more efficient and faster than ever.
Face ID is used by the iOS operating system for tasks such as unlocking an iPhone, providing access to password-protected third-party apps, confirming iTunes and App Store purchases, and authenticating Apple Pay payments.
Face ID works through a set of sensors and cameras built into the front of the iPhone 11 called the TrueDepth Camera system. To create a face scan, a point projector projects over 30,000 invisible infrared points onto your face, which are then read by an infrared camera.
This depth map of your face is then fed to the A13 Bionic processor, where it is converted into a mathematical model that the iPhone uses to make sure you are trying to access your iPhone.
Face ID uses infrared, so it works in low light and dark environments, with a built-in Flood Illuminator to ensure there is always enough light to scan your face. Face ID works with hats, beards, glasses, sunglasses, scarves, makeup, and all other accessories and items that may partially obscure your face, but needs to see your eyes, nose, and mouth to work.
The A13 Bionic chip with a built-in neural engine means Face ID can adapt over time to subtle facial changes, so if you grow your hair or grow a beard, Face ID will tune in and continue to unlock your iPhone.
Face ID security and privacy
Face ID uses detailed 3D facial scans that cannot be fooled by a photo, mask, or other facial imitation. Safety function “Attention!” Allows Face ID to unlock your device only when you look towards the iPhone 11 with your eyes open, so it doesn’t work when your eyes are closed, when you sleep, when you’re unconscious, or when you look away from your phone.
Attention Awareness is optional and there is an accessibility feature to turn it off for those who can’t focus on the iPhone screen, but most people should leave it on for an extra layer of security.
Thanks to its attention feature, iPhone 11 knows when you’re looking at it. Face ID displays notifications and messages on the lock screen when you look at the iPhone 11, it keeps the screen on and automatically lowers the alarm or ringtone volume when it knows your focus is on the iPhone 11 display.
If a thief demands your iPhone, Face ID can be turned off quickly and discreetly by pressing the side and volume buttons at the same time. Do this before handing over your phone, and the thief will not be able to scan your face. Face ID also turns off after two failed facial recognition attempts, and you must enter your passcode to turn it back on.
Face ID data is encrypted and stored in the Secure Enclave on iPhone 11. Apple cannot access your Face ID data, nor can anyone else have your phone. Authentication happens entirely on your device, and Face ID data is never stored in the cloud or uploaded to Apple. Third-party developers don’t have access to the face card that Face ID uses to unlock the device, but the TrueDepth camera can be used to scan a user’s face to create more realistic augmented reality applications.
With Face ID, there’s a 1 in 1,000,000 chance that someone’s face can cheat on Face ID, but the error rate rises to 1 in 1 in 500,000 with an alternate look that’s registered in iOS 13. Face ID cheats with identical twins, kids, and carefully crafted mask, but it’s still secure enough that the average person doesn’t have to worry about someone else unlocking their iPhone.
TrueDepth Camera Features
The TrueDepth camera system, in addition to supporting Face ID with additional biometric components, is also a standard front-facing camera that can be used for selfies.
In the iPhone 11, the front camera has been bumped up to 12 megapixels from the 7 megapixels in the iPhone XR, and it supports next-generation Smart HDR. The updated camera is capable of recording video at 60 frames per second in 4K format with support for high dynamic range video at 30 frames per second.
With the new front-facing camera, you can switch your iPhone from portrait to landscape mode to automatically capture more in the frame, useful for situations like group selfies.
When you take a selfie with the iPhone 11 in standard portrait orientation, it uses the enlarged 7MP version. Putting your iPhone in landscape mode allows more in the frame and results in 12MP photography, as does clicking on the small arrow to zoom out in portrait orientation.
For the first time, the front-facing TrueDepth camera is capable of shooting slow-motion video at 120 frames per second, allowing for a new feature that Apple calls “Slofies.” This is a front-facing slow-motion video, similar to the rear-camera available on previous iPhones.
Animoji and Memoji
The TrueDepth camera system supports two features called “Animoji” and “Memoji,” which are animated 3D emoji that you control with your face. Animoji are emoji-style animals, and memoji are customizable, personalized avatars that you can create.
To include Animoji and Memoji, the TrueDepth camera analyzes over 50 muscle movements in various areas of the face, detecting movement of the eyebrows, cheeks, chin, eyes, jaw, lips, eyes, and mouth.
All of your facial movements are translated into Animoji / Memoji characters, allowing them to reflect your expression and emotions. Animoji and Memoji can be sent to friends and used in Messages and FaceTime.
There are over a dozen different Animoji to choose from, modeled after existing emojis: monkey, robot, cat, dog, alien, fox, poop, pig, panda, rabbit, chicken, unicorn, lion, dragon, skull, bear, tiger, koala, tyrannosaurus and ghost. There are unlimited Memoji you can create to make them look like you and other people.
Starting with iOS 13, there are also Animoji and Memoji stickers that can be used in the Messages app and other areas of the operating system.
The main innovation in the iPhone 11 is the redesigned dual-lens system. It includes a 6-element 12MP wide-angle lens with f / 1.8 (26mm focal length) and a 5-element 12MP ultra-wide-angle lens with f / 2.4 (13mm focal length) instead of one 12MP. the camera lens in the iPhone XR.
The new ultra wide-angle lens has a 120-degree field of view, ideal when you want to take a landscape or architecture shot, or fit more into the frame. Unlike the iPhone 11 Pro, it does not have a telephoto lens, so while 2x optical zoom is supported, there is no optical zoom function.
The standard wide-angle camera supports optical image stabilization, but the ultra-wide-angle lens does not.
With the new ultra-wide-angle lens, Apple is introducing an updated camera app interface that displays the entire field of view captured by the ultra-wide-angle lens, even when you shoot with a standard wide-angle lens. Switching between modes is done with one touch.
iPhone 11 Pro camera
The iPhone 11 features next-generation Smart HDR, which Apple says is better at recognizing people by processing them differently than the rest of the footage. Faces have highlights, shadows, and natural skin tones, while background elements are preserved.
The wide-angle camera in iPhone 11 features a new, larger sensor with 100 percent pixel focusing that enables new low-light capabilities, such as Night Mode, designed to take brighter low-light shots. It is similar to Google’s Night Shift mode, brightening photos with software.
Night mode turns on automatically in low light conditions and you don’t need to use a flash with it. When you’re in a low-light area, the camera takes multiple shots while OIS helps stabilize the lens.
The A13 chip is then used to align the images for motion correction. Parts with too much blur are removed, and sharper images are combined. Contrast is then tweaked, colors are fine-tuned, excess noise is eliminated, and detail is enhanced to create a final image that looks much brighter and clearer than lighting conditions would normally allow.

While the iPhone 11 doesn’t have a telephoto lens, it can still take portrait mode shots with other camera lenses like the iPhone XR. The two cameras work together to create portrait mode photos where the subject of the photo is in focus and the background is blurred, similar to the effect you get with a DSLR.
The portrait mode in iPhone 11 has been improved as it works with people, pets, food, and more. On the iPhone XR, portrait mode was limited to taking pictures of people.
The iPhone 11 supports portrait lighting, which lets you change the lighting effects of an image using software. IPhone 11 supports other lighting modes, including Natural, Studio. Outline, Stage, Mono Stage, and High Key. Stage and Stage Mono were not available on XR.
Starting with iOS 13, portrait lighting effects can be adjusted using the intensity slider, which makes them more useful as you can achieve a more sophisticated look.
Other camera features
Other available camera features include 36% brighter True Tone flash, 63 megapixel panoramas, wide color capture, Live Photos support, advanced red-eye correction, and burst mode.
Apple plans to introduce Deep Fusion this fall, a new imaging system that uses the A13 Bionic and Neural Engine. Deep Fusion uses advanced machine learning techniques to process photos by pixel, optimizing texture, detail and noise in every part of the image.
Deep Fusion aims to enhance indoor and medium-light photography. This is a function that is automatically activated based on the lens used and the light level in the room, not based on what can be manually turned on.
Both the wide-angle and ultra-wide-angle lenses also work in video mode, and you can switch between them with one touch while shooting. The iPhone 11 shoots 4K video at 60fps with both lenses, and the ultra-wide-angle camera can shoot four times as many scenes for better shots.
The iPhone 11 supports high dynamic range when capturing video at up to 60 frames per second, and OIS is available for video captured with a standard wide-angle camera.
Audio Zoom is designed to match the audio to the video frame for better sound when shooting video on iPhone.
The new QuickTake feature lets you shoot video by holding the shutter button in still mode, so you can capture the moment without having to switch from standard camera mode to video mode.
When shooting outdoors, the A13 Bionic can use machine learning to automatically track a moving subject when QuickTake is enabled.
The iPhone 11 offers one hour more battery life compared to the iPhone XR. The iPhone 11 has a 3,110mAh battery, which is higher than the 2,942mAh battery found in the iPhone XR.
Apple claims it will last 17 hours of video playback, up to 10 hours of video streaming, and up to 65 hours of audio playback.
According to Apple’s support document, the iPhone 11 models feature a new hybrid performance management system that is more advanced than the battery and power management systems found on older iPhones.
Apple says this feature works to provide “the best possible performance as the battery ages over time.” The power requirements of the new iPhones are dynamically tracked and performance adjusted in real time.
iPhone 11 supports fast charging, which means it can be charged to 50 percent in just 30 minutes. Fast charging requires a minimum 18W USB-C power adapter, including Apple 29 / 30W adapters (priced at $ 49).
The iPhone 11 Pro and Pro Max come with an 18W USB-C power adapter and a USB-C to Lightning cable, but the iPhone 11, since it’s cheaper, comes with a 5W power adapter and a standard USB-A to Lightning cable.
The iPhone 11 has a glass body with built-in wireless charging coils to support the wireless charging function.
Apple uses the Qi wireless charging standard, which is also available in many Android phones, which means new iPhones can be charged wirelessly using any Qi-certified inductive charger.
The iPhone 11 works with 7.5W and 5W wireless charging accessories, but 7.5W charging is faster. Several companies have developed wireless charging options designed specifically for Apple’s iPhones. Some 7.5W chargers no longer charge 5W on the iPhone 11 and 11 Pro, which is worth pointing out to anyone thinking of buying a wireless charger.
The iPhone 11 is equipped with an Intel modem chip that supports Gigabit-class LTE with 2×2 MIMO and LAA. This is an improvement over the LTE Advanced in the iPhone XR, but not as good as the Gigabit LTE with 4×4 MIMO and LAA in the iPhone 11 Pro. The iPhone 11 supports up to 30 LTE bands, which is convenient when traveling.
5G support, a feature that was added to the 2020 iPhone lineup, is not included. The iPhone 11, 11 Pro and 11 Pro Max cannot connect to 5G networks and are limited to 4G LTE networks. However, 4G technology will continue to be used alongside 5G for years to come, so the iPhone 11 will work even now that the iPhone 5G is available.
Dual SIM support
Dual SIM support, which allows you to use two phone numbers at the same time, is included in the iPhone 11. Dual SIM functionality is provided by the inclusion of one physical nano-SIM and eSIM slot.
ESIM is available in many countries around the world, and Apple has a full list of carriers that support eSIM on their website.
Dual SIM cards work with select carriers in Austria, Canada, Croatia, Czech Republic, Germany, Hungary, India, Spain, UK and USA.
The iPhone 11 features a new Apple-designed U1 chip that supports Ultra Wideband technology for improved spatial awareness. The chip enables the iPhone 11 to pinpoint the location of other Apple devices with the U1, which will ultimately make it easier to find your lost device.
Apple compares Ultra Wideband to “living room-scale GPS,” which is accurate because the technology is designed specifically for improved indoor positioning.
One example of Apple using the U1 chip is AirDrop in iOS 13.1. Apple says you can simply point your iPhone at someone’s iPhone and their device will appear first on your list of AirDrop targets.
Bluetooth and Wi-Fi
The iPhone 11 supports Bluetooth 5.0. Bluetooth 5.0 offers greater range, faster speeds, higher broadcast capacity, and better compatibility with other wireless technologies.
Compared to Bluetooth 4.2, Bluetooth 5 offers four times the range, twice the speed, and eight times the broadcast capacity.
Supports WiFi 6 with 2×2 MIMO, also known as 802.11ax WiFi. WiFi 6 is the latest Wi-Fi protocol that lets you download files 38 percent faster than Wi-Fi 5 (also known as 802.11ac). WiFi 6 is a new Wi-Fi protocol that is not widely used, but support is likely to become more important over the next few years.
GPS and NFC
IPhone 11 includes support for location services GPS, GLONASS, Galileo, and QZSS.
NFC with Reader Mode is included, and there is a background tagging feature that allows iPhone models to scan for NFC tags without having to open the app first.
